Installation of our latest Pipe Combination Organ at St. Francis of Assisi
Catholic Church in Bend, Oregon
Central Oregon has a new pipe combination organ to support their musical events.
This spring Stephenson and Associates completed the installation of St. Francis of Assisi CatholicChurch’s new 85 rank pipe/digital combinationorgan. A project that spanned almost 2 years ofeffort has culminated in one of the most beautiful andartistically satisfying instruments in the Bend area.
Coordinating the project for St. Francis was Father Joe Reinig, M. Div., and John Henchman, Head of the Church Building Committee. In the very early stages of the planning of the new sanctuary, Stephenson and Associates met with Father Reinig and Mr. Frank Yungers who visited the Rodgers Factory to see what we could offer the new sanctuary being planned. Not only was St Francis looking for an inspiring sound to accompany the choir and lead the congregation in song, but they were also looking for an architectural statement to enhance the ascetics of the new worship space. “The organ is a very important addition to the church for me” said Mr. Yungers, as he was preparing to underwrite the expense of this new pipe instrument. He wanted the very best organ for the church. After a complete tour of the facilities, and pipe combination instruments installed in the Portland area, both he and Father Reinig liked what they saw and heard. Rodgers Instruments and Stephenson and Associates, Inc. were chosen as the builders of record for this exciting project.
Working with Robert Becker of the architectural firm Becker Architects in Bellevue, Washington. Stephenson and Associates was challenged with the creating a unique design for a wall area that was almost 40 ft high at its peak and almost 40 ft in width.
John Parker of Acanthus who shares our business space, was contracted with to build the pipe chests and all the casework. George Kirkwood was the lead engineer on the installation of the console and audio systems, and Tom Goodapple from Rodgers did the tonal finishing and tuning of the pipe work.
It was a team effort with an exceptional outcome. The first public concert on the instrument will be July 23rd.
